Is there a DVLA driving licence app?

There are several different government and non-government digital services for drivers, so it's useful to understand the difference.

Many people search for a DVLA app when they want to view licence details or manage vehicle records online. DVLA provides online services that allow you to view and manage driving and vehicle information.

The government is also developing GOV.UK Wallet, which is intended to allow people to store government-issued digital documents, including a digital driving licence app experience on your phone, as part of its wider digital identity plans.

Driver Codes is an independent app for drivers. It is not the DVLA or GOV.UK app.

It gives you convenient access to driving licence and vehicle information and brings a number of useful driving tools together in one place.

What can I see in the Driver Codes app?

Driver Codes can give you access to:

Your driving licence

View key information from your driving licence and the vehicles you're entitled to drive.

Penalty points and endorsements

Check endorsements recorded against your licence and see the points associated with them.

Driving licence check codes

Generate and manage DVLA driving licence check codes when you need to share your driving record.

Driver CPC

Professional drivers can keep track of Driver CPC information and training.

Your vehicles

Keep useful vehicle information alongside your driving licence, including MOT and tax information.

Reminders

Keep track of important driving and vehicle dates.

Fuel prices

Find nearby petrol and diesel prices using current fuel-price data.

Can I put my driving licence on my phone?

There are two slightly different things people can mean by this.

Driver Codes allows you to access and display useful information associated with your driving licence from your phone.

The UK government is separately developing an official digital driving licence for GOV.UK Wallet.

Driver Codes does not turn your phone into a replacement for your physical photocard driving licence and is not the official government digital driving licence.

Can I check my licence from the app?

Yes.

Once your driving licence is linked to Driver Codes, you can quickly check information such as your driving entitlements, endorsements and other licence details from your phone.

Can I see my driving licence points in the app?

Yes. Driver Codes can show endorsements and penalty-point information associated with your driving record.

This makes it easier to check what is currently recorded against your licence and when relevant endorsements are due to expire.

Can I generate a DVLA check code from the app?

Yes.

Driver Codes lets you generate a driving licence check code when you need to share your driving record.

Check codes are commonly required by employers, vehicle hire companies and other organisations that need to confirm what vehicles you're entitled to drive or whether you have endorsements.

Driver Codes for professional drivers

Driver Codes is particularly useful if driving is part of your job.

As well as your driving licence, professional drivers can keep Driver CPC information and other driving details together in the app.

Businesses can also use Driver Codes to carry out authorised driving licence checks on their drivers.

Is Driver Codes an official DVLA app?

No.

Driver Codes is an independent service and is not part of DVLA, DVSA or GOV.UK.

That independence is deliberate: we focus on giving drivers a practical driving licence app for everyday use — checking entitlements, points, check codes and vehicle information — without pretending to be a government product. The service has been operating since 2019, and more than 100,000 drivers in the UK use Driver Codes.

Where features use government information or services, we clearly identify the relevant source.

For official government driving licence services you can use GOV.UK directly.
