Driver Codes app showing penalty points on a UK driving licence

If you need to check points on your licence, your penalty points (endorsements) are held on your DVLA driving record. You can run a DVLA points check online in a few minutes — most drivers use the Driver Codes app or the official GOV.UK view driving licence service.

Check your driving licence points online

You can check your driving licence points (and see when they expire) using either:

  • Driver Codes — link your licence once, then open Points in the app whenever you need a quick check on your phone.
  • GOV.UK — use the view driving licence service for an official online check of endorsements on your record.

Both show what is currently recorded against your licence, including endorsement codes, penalty points and relevant dates.

How to check points in the Driver Codes app

  1. If you have not already, download the Driver Codes app from your app store.
  2. Create a Driver Codes profile and link it to your DVLA details. Your information is encrypted and protected by your phone's biometric challenge.
  3. Once your licence has loaded, open the menu using the top-left menu icon and select Points.

Using Driver Codes gives you fast access to your real-time DVLA information, so you are only a few seconds away from checking your current status. For a broader licence check — not just points — see check my driving licence.

If you need to share your points with an employer or insurer, see our guide on what a DVLA check code is.

DVLA points check on GOV.UK

For an official check of points on your licence through government services:

  1. Go to View or share your driving licence information on GOV.UK.
  2. Sign in or enter your driving licence number, National Insurance number and postcode as prompted.
  3. Review your driving record, including penalty points and disqualifications.

GOV.UK is the right choice when you specifically need the official DVLA online service. Many drivers still use Driver Codes day to day because points, entitlements and check codes stay in one app.

Where do points show on my driving licence?

Penalty points — officially called endorsements — are not printed on your photocard licence. Since the paper counterpart was abolished in 2015, they exist only on your DVLA record.

That is why people search for where points appear: they are not on the card in your wallet. The only way to see them is to check online — using Driver Codes or GOV.UK as above.

When you run a points check, your record will normally show each endorsement code, the number of penalty points, and dates such as when an endorsement is due to expire or be removed from your record.
