Moving to a new address? Remember to update your driving licence details. Here is a simple guide to changing your address on your UK driving licence.
Why update your driving licence address?
Keeping your driving licence address up to date is essential for receiving official correspondence. Failure to update it can result in a fine of up to £1,000 from the DVLA — and it is free to do, so there is no reason to delay.
Steps to change your address
1. Check your eligibility
You can apply if:
- You have a valid UK driving licence
- You have lived in Great Britain for the last three years
- You are not banned from driving
2. Apply online
- Go to the DVLA website to update your address online for free.
- You will need your driving licence, National Insurance number and (if available) passport number.
3. Apply by post (if your name has also changed)
If you are changing your name alongside your address, you must apply by post.
4. Update your other documents
Remember to update your vehicle log book (V5C) and, if applicable, your Direct Debit for vehicle tax.
5. What happens next
The DVLA will send a confirmation email after you apply.
Additional tips
- Changing your photo: if your licence has less than two years remaining, you can update your photo at the same time.
- Moving abroad: your UK address cannot be updated for international moves. Instead, contact the driving licence authority in your new country.
Following these steps keeps your records up to date and ensures you are compliant with UK driving regulations. For a full breakdown of any fees involved with other changes, see how much a driving licence costs.
