About the card

card

Our Driver Codes card aims to explore the use of smart technologies to assist with the often frequent need for motorists to have their licence verified by their employer or an authorised 3rd party. Already used by over ten thousand motorists, our app is already making it easier for users to view and share their licence information; however we wanted to explore options further to reduce the time and the hassle for both the motorist and the verifier.

We would welcome the opportunity to work with companies who perform manual but repeat checks on their drivers to identify how best to integrate an employee presenting a card (or in future their phone) with your existing processes. Combined with a cheap NFC reader plugged in to your office PC the process will save the need for the employee to generate a DVLA share code and for verifiers to receive and re-key the code - which in summary provides for a simple and secure way for licence information to be shared when required.

Our goal is to continue developing our Driver Codes app to offer full mobile driving licence ISO 18013-5 compatibility for mobile driving licences and are pleased to have recently joined the Secure Technology Alliance to participate with this emerging international standard. We appreciate the DVLA themselves may offer such in due course; but plan to continue innovating in this space as an independent service provider.

As an employer, please do not verify a card holder's licence using a smartphone if it does not fall within your existing company's information security and data retention policies. We have a number of free NFC reader's as part of the beta trial and would welcome the opportunity to speak with employers further - please email to hello@driver.codes

How the card works

Tap or scan

The card can be tapped against an NFC reader or most modern smartphones to initiate a link to the holder's unique verification screen. If no NFC is available, the QR code printed on the card can be scanned instead by the verifier (e.g. employer).

Request to verify licence

A web browser will launch on the verifier's device/PC from where a request can be made to view licence information. The verifier should observe the on-screen instructions and wait until the card holder has authorised the request.

Card holder receives request

A push notification is immediately sent to the card holder's phone and by logging in to the Driver Codes app they will be able to approve or reject the request.

Verifier receives licence information

Just a few seconds after authorisation the verifier's browser will update with the card holder's licence information - as provided by the DVLA in PDF format. This can be saved in line with the data retention and GDPR policies in place between the company and employee.
